Weather can be unpredictable here in Tokyo and deciding what to bring home as souvenirs during a trip is always tricky, especially on a wet rainy day. You do not want something off the shelf, but neither do you want something so special that you have to brave the weather for it; What you will want is something that can remind you of the trip and yet unique to the place you visited. How about considering making them with your own hands? Within Tokyo City there are a number of craft shops that allow you to experience and learn about the traditional art crafts of Japan indoor.

1) Art of paper folding

Origami literally means folding paper in Japanese. At the Tokyo Origami Kaikan, you can witness the master transform a piece of paper into various amazing creatures - From the atypical crane to complex folds such as Snoopy the dog or a dragon. Everyday during specific hours, you can also experience making a paper souvenirs to bring back home.

Japanese believe that when a cat washes its face, there will be visitors arriving soon. This lucky cat has been the love object of many for the longest time, although usually depicted as a calico cat, numerous variations have since sprung from it. Here in a little cafe in Tanaka, the owner provides you with a blank cat (in 2 sizes) and colouring tools when you purchase a set of their tea or coffee, feel free to let your inspiration flow!

3) Japanese woodblock printing

If we are to talk about art in Japan, the most recognizable image has to be the “The Great Wave of Kanagawa” - a painting depicting an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast of the town of Kanagawa while Mount Fuji rises in the background. This image was created by Japanese Artist Katsushika Hokusai through woodblock printing, a craft that was that was passed on for generations; although the practitioners of this craft is dwindling, here in Tokyo, you will still be able to have a hands-on experience in creating your own piece of “The Great Wave of Kanagawa”.
